Overview

This penthouse refurbishment in Kensington, West London called for a refined, seamless wall finish that would carry one calm, consistent tone through every bathroom in the home. Working alongside the client’s design team, we applied Kerakoll Wallcrete in WR01 – a soft warm white from Kerakoll’s Warm Collection – across the master bathroom, the guest bathroom, the downstairs WC and a feature media wall in the main living space.

The brief

The design scheme paired natural stone basins and vanity tops, dark-stained timber cabinetry and brushed metal fittings against large uninterrupted wall planes. Tiles, with their grout lines and edges, would have broken the effect. The brief was a single continuous surface with subtle tonal variation: grout-free microcement bathroom walls, in the same finish and colour in every room, from the twin-basin master vanity wall to the smallest WC.

Extending the same Wallcrete finish onto the living-room media wall tied the wet areas and living spaces together – one material language across the whole penthouse.

Waterproofing & build-up

Bathroom walls only perform as well as the system beneath them. In splash and shower zones the Wallcrete build-up was applied over the Kerakoll Aquastop tanking system, in line with the approach we set out in our guide to NHBC guidance for microcement and resin in bathrooms and wet rooms. Wallcrete itself is a cement-based decorative finish; correctly primed, layered and sealed as a system, it is well suited to bathroom wall and splash-zone use.

Application

Each wall was hand-applied by our in-house installers in multiple layers, then sealed. Wallcrete’s character comes from the trowel: a soft, tactile texture with gentle movement in the surface rather than a flat, painted look. Colour consistency across four separate areas was the key discipline on this project – batches and application were sequenced so that WR01 reads identically in the master bathroom, guest bathroom, WC and media wall, under very different lighting conditions.

The result

A calm, cohesive and quietly luxurious set of rooms. The backlit mirrors and concealed cove lighting graze across the Wallcrete surface and pick out its subtle texture, while the warm white tone flatters both the stone and the dark timber. Grout-free walls also mean practical upkeep: nothing to discolour, no mould lines, just an occasional wipe down.
