Banbury Station Transformation — “Highly Commended Award”

Installation Date: June 2025
Location: Banbury Station, Oxfordshire
Flooring Type: Chiltern Railways
Contractor: Braybrook (main contractor) — The Resin Floor Co. engaged by Braybrook
Scope: Washroom refurbishment, bespoke resin flooring systems, ancillary details

Overview

Banbury station was Highly Commended at the 2025 Rail Innovation Awards for its wide-ranging improvements. The Resin Floor Co. was engaged by Braybrook Railway Contractors to deliver specialist resin flooring and associated works as part of a wider station upgrade programme carried out with Chiltern Railways, Network Rail and local partners. Our involvement helped create a cleaner, safer and more consistent environment for staff and passengers.

Our scope of works

  • Washroom refurbishment — full waterproofing, high-performance tiling, modern sanitaryware and touch-free fixtures for hygiene and long-term durability.
  • Bespoke resin flooring systems — custom-specified to align with Chiltern’s refreshed branding and colour schemes, including a tailored flake blend and base colour to deliver the required aesthetic and performance.
  • Ancillary details — threshold ramps, transition trims and bespoke perimeter finishes to ensure seamless, safe junctions between floor surfaces.

Challenges & solutions

  • Complex substrate conditions — multiple base materials across the site required specialist primers, levelling compounds and staged repairs; we sequenced works to ensure consistent adhesion and finish.
  • Brand integration — close collaboration with Chiltern’s design team to match the new corporate palette in the resin system, ensuring consistency and following brand guidelines.
  • Operational constraints — works were phased around live station operations; detailed programme planning and night / off-peak shifts minimised disruption to passengers.

Installation process

  • Survey & programming — coordinated with Braybrook and Chiltern to fully programme access, deliveries and out-of-hours working.
  • Substrate preparation — concrete repairs, priming and smoothing to achieve a uniform base for the resin system.
  • Waterproofing & tiling (washrooms) — application of specialist membranes and high-performance tiling prior to final fixtures.
  • Resin application — multi-coat resin system applied by our certified installers with bespoke flake blend and base coat; hand-finished demarcations for wayfinding where required.
  • Testing & handover — slip resistance and visual inspections carried out; full client walkthrough and aftercare briefing.

Result & standards achieved

  • Durability: resin systems specified to resist heavy footfall and daily cleaning regimes.
  • Brand coherence: bespoke flake and base-coat colouration reinforce Chiltern’s refreshed identity across the concourse.
  • Safety: slip-resistant finishes and clear demarcation support improved passenger movement.
  • User experience: refurbished washrooms and circulation areas deliver improved hygiene, accessibility and modern finishes.
